Squat Pose (Utkatasan)
Stand erect, feet 12 inches apart.  Lower the body by balancing on toes, if possible drop heels into the floor.  Wrap arms around the knees or place hands in prayer.  If you can’t drop into deep knee bend, go as far as you feel comfortable and hold.  Release when you feel the need and always keep breathing. Note: although  not necessarily a part of traditionally taught Utkatasan, while in the squat, push your pelvic forward and back, the rocking will charge the auric field.  Breathe in the color red.

Yoga has many branches and techniques. It is easy to get overwhelmed by the choices. Many of us in the western world relate most commonly to the physical exercises- the asanas, postures, or poses that are part of the practice of yoga. Let’s explore beyond the physical, discussing the various asanas and their relationship to the body, its energy fields and its psychic-spiritual centers or chakras.

Though our body has many minor chakras, we will focus on the seven major chakras, where they are, what they do, and how they can be activated thru practice of yoga asanas. This month, we study the asana  (Utkatasan) or Squat Pose. In Hatha Yoga, it is also referred to as the Saturn Center.

The word “yoga” means union. It is a union of the individual soul with the supreme soul. As you become a devoted practitioner to the path of yoga, you will begin to observe certain mental transformations that mirror the more obvious physical transformations. This relationship between mind and body will not only stimulate regeneration and rebuild the human body, but also activate the auric (energy) field and develop the “God-like Spirit” within us all. Most of us are so active on all levels, only with conscious awareness can we observe and be sensitive to this energy.

If you are educated in energy work and understand the fundamental concept of Life-Energy and its relationship to body-mind-spirit, you could actually feel chakras open and the movement of energy. It is like a vertical power current running through the body. This current removes blockages in the physical, mental or spiritual selves. The Squat Pose (Utkatasan) asana correlates to the Base Chakra or Root Chakra.

In eastern literature, the chakras are described as having a certain number of petals. The petals are rotating vortexes that spin very fast, metabolizing an energy vibration. Each Chakra reflects a certain color produced by its high frequency.  A gifted or trained person is able to see this vibrational energy color. The Squat Pose (Utkatasan)’s color is red.

Also, each chakra is associated with a particular endocrine gland and nerve plexus. As chakras absorb universal energy (prana), they distribute this energy along energy paths (nadis) to one’s nervous system, endocrine glands and throughout our bloodstream to nourish our entire body. The Squat Pose (Utkatasan) governs the spinal column and kidneys,  and correlates with the adrenal glands.
